Lacquer
A fast-drying, clear or colored wood finish that dries by solvent evaporation.
Lag Bolt (or Lag Screw)
A large metal screw with a hexagonal head, used with a nut.
Lally Column
A steel pipe filled with concrete to act as a structural support column.

Laminate
A product made by bonding together two or more layers of material.
Leader Pipe
The pipe that carries rainwater from the gutter to the ground or sewer.
Lean-To Roof
A single slope roof with its upper edge adjoining a wall or a larger roof.
Ledger Board
A horizontal lumber beam attached to a wall to support the ends of joists.
Lime
Calcium-based material, often used in plaster and mortar.
Lintel
A horizontal support of timber, stone, concrete, or steel across the top of a door or window.
Load-Bearing Wall
A wall that supports the weight of the elements above it, in addition to its own weight.
Lookout
A short, horizontal member in roof framing that extends beyond the wall line.
Louver
Slatted openings for ventilation while blocking direct light and rain.
Lumber
Wood material, either rough-sawn or planed, used in construction.
Lye
A strong alkaline solution used for cleaning or as a component in some kinds of paint.
