Oakum
A fibrous material made by untwisting old ropes, commonly used in plumbing for sealing joints and seams in pipes. It is soaked in tar or other sealants and packed tightly to prevent leaks, particularly in cast-iron pipe joints.

Occlusion
In construction and plumbing, occlusion refers to the blockage or closing of pipes, drains, or conduits. Clearing occlusions is essential to maintain proper water flow, preventing backups and potential structural damage.

Offset
A bend or deviation in a pipe or conduit used to change the direction, elevation, or alignment of plumbing or electrical lines. It allows pipes to bypass obstacles or obstructions while maintaining a continuous flow.

Construction glossary term - Oriel Windows

Ogee
An architectural term describing an S-shaped curve profile often used in molding, trim work, or millwork. Ogee profiles are common in baseboards, door frames, and decorative elements, adding visual interest to home interiors.

Open Web Steel Joist (OWSJ)
A lightweight steel joist characterized by an open, web-like structure made of parallel chords and diagonals. OWSJs are used in construction for floors and roofs in residential and commercial buildings due to their strength and versatility.

Oriel Window
A bay window that projects from the main wall of a building but doesn’t extend to the ground. Oriel windows provide additional interior space, light, and architectural appeal, often seen in older and historic home designs.

Overhang
The extension of a roof or structure beyond the exterior walls. Overhangs protect exterior walls from weather elements like rain and sun, contributing to energy efficiency by shading windows and walls.

Oxidation
The chemical reaction of a substance with oxygen, often leading to rust or corrosion in metals. In construction, oxidation can weaken structural elements or pipes, necessitating protective coatings or materials resistant to oxidation.
