Underlayment
A layer of material placed under a finishing layer, often used in roofing or flooring for additional protection.

Uniform Building Code (UBC)
A standardized code for building construction, often replaced by the International Building Code (IBC).

Uplift
The upward force exerted by wind pressure on structural elements, particularly roofs.

Urethane
A type of polymer used in sealants, adhesives, and coatings in construction.

Utility Easement
A portion of a property reserved for utilities installations and maintenance.

Vapor Barrier
A material used to prevent moisture from penetrating walls or floors.

Varnish
A transparent, hard, protective finish primarily used in wood finishing.

Vent Pipe
A pipe allowing gas to escape from the plumbing system of a building.

Veneer
A thin layer of decorative wood or other material applied to a coarser base.

Vierendeel Truss
A type of truss without diagonal bracing, with rigid joints.

Voltage Drop
The reduction in voltage in an electrical circuit, particularly over long distances.

Vulcanization
A chemical process for converting rubber or related polymers into more durable materials.

Wainscoting
Wooden paneling that lines the lower part of the walls of a room.

Water Table
The level below the earth’s surface at which ground water saturates the soil.

Weep Hole
A small opening that allows water to drain from within an assembly.

Wet Vent
A plumbing vent pipe that also serves as a drain pipe.

Wind Brace
Diagonal bracing provided to improve a structure’s resistance to wind forces.

Workman’s Compensation
Insurance that covers injuries to workers during construction.

Wrought Iron
Iron that is tough, malleable, and less fusible than pig iron, used for decorative ironwork.

Yield Strength
The stress at which a material begins to deform plastically.

Yoke Vent
A pipe connecting upward from a soil or waste stack to a vent stack for preventing pressure changes in the stacks.

Zero Lot Line
A construction where a building is placed very close to the property line.

Zinc Coating
A metal coating applied to steel or iron to prevent rusting, also known as galvanization.

Zone Valve
A valve controlling the flow of water or steam in a heating or cooling system.
