Sash
A frame that holds the glass in a window, typically capable of moving up and down.
Scaffolding
A temporary structure used to support work crews and materials during construction.
Scupper
An opening in a wall or parapet for draining water from a flat roof.

Seismic Retrofit
The modification of existing structures to make them more resistant to seismic activity.
Sheathing
The boards or sheet materials that are fastened to rafters to cover a house or building.
Shoring
The process of supporting a structure in order to prevent collapse during construction or repairs.
Sill
The lowest horizontal member of the frame of a structure, such as a window or door.
Skylight
A window installed in a roof or ceiling.
Slab Foundation
A type of foundation with a single layer of concrete, thickened at the edges.
Sleeper
A timber or other support laid directly on the ground to support floor framing.
Soffit
The underside of an architectural feature, as of a beam, arch, ceiling, or overhang.
Spandrel
The space between the top of one window and the sill of the window above in a building.
Stucco
A fine plaster used for coating wall surfaces or molding into architectural decorations.
Square Footage
The area of a space measured in square feet.
Stud
A vertical framing member in a building’s wall of smaller cross-section than a post.
Subfloor
The foundation for a floor in a building.
Sweat Equity
Value added to a property by the owner through labor or services.
